The Centro Histórico is only 8 to 12 minutes away by car (or ride share). Once you’re there, you can explore:

• Plaza Grande, Mérida’s main square, is full of life and local color.

• The breathtaking Cathedral, especially in the evenings.

• Museums, local shops, cafés, and some of the best tacos in town.

We always recommend giving yourself time to wander without a plan — that’s how you find the hidden gems!

From Casa Cheros, getting to Izamal is a breeze—it’s just over an hour away by car, heading east out of Mérida. The drive is super easy and scenic, taking you through little towns and open countryside. You’ll basically follow the main highway most of the way, with clear signs pointing you toward Izamal as you get closer.

Once you arrive, you won’t miss it—the yellow buildings start popping up right away and lead you straight into the heart of town. It’s the perfect little road trip from the house, especially if you leave in the morning and spend the afternoon exploring.

Izamal, known as the "Yellow City" of Yucatán, is a charming town steeped in history and vibrant color. Nearly every building is painted in a rich golden yellow, creating a warm, glowing atmosphere that draws travelers from around the world.

This picturesque town is both a colonial gem and a Maya heritage site, with ancient pyramids like Kinich Kakmó rising from its heart. At its center is the stunning Convento de San Antonio de Padua, built atop a Maya pyramid in the 16th century, boasting one of the largest atriums in the Americas. Desde Casa Cheros, llegar a Izamal es muy fácil: está a poco más de una hora en coche, saliendo hacia el este desde Mérida. El camino es muy sencillo y pintoresco, pasando por pequeños pueblos y campo abierto. Básicamente seguirás la carretera principal casi todo el trayecto, con señales claras que te irán guiando hacia Izamal a medida que te acerques.

Una vez que llegues, no hay pierde: los edificios amarillos comienzan a aparecer de inmediato y te guían directo al corazón del pueblo. Es el paseo perfecto para hacer desde la casa, especialmente si sales por la mañana y pasas la tarde explorando.

Looking for a magical escape from Mérida? From Casa Cheros, a 2.5–3 hour drive brings you to Las Coloradas, home to Mexico’s famous pink lakes—and yes, they’re as stunning as they look in photos!

We left Casa Cheros early, coffee in hand, and hit the open road through sleepy Yucatán towns. The drive was easy and scenic—perfect for a quick playlist and a few snack stops. As we got closer, salt mounds and flamingos started popping into view, and the water slowly turned shades of blush pink.

🧂 What to expect: You’ll need to pay for a short guided tour (about 30–40 minutes) to access the pink lake area—no walking in on your own anymore. Bring sunscreen, water, and a camera—the reflections are unreal under the midday sun!

🦩 Bonus tip: Book a combo tour that includes a boat ride in Río Lagartos. We saw flamingos, crocodiles, and even took a Mayan mud bath. Worth it!

You can head back the same day, but staying overnight in the area means fewer crowds and a stunning pink sunrise. Either way, returning to Casa Cheros for a dip in the pool is the perfect way to end the adventure.
